the-irregular-at-magic-high-school-episode-10I’m starting to think The Irregular at Magic High School is fated to be an overall dull affair for me. At some points, it teases me by perking my interest for a few minuteslike in the last set of episodes I reviewed, for examplebut then my hopes are crushed into dust. Sound excessive? Well, I’m sorry, but when I try to watch this anime three times and literally fall asleep during the first two attempts, we have problems.

Basically, episodes eight, nine, and ten can be summed up as follows: the main cast’s Magic High School is invited to participate in a contest known as the Nine Schools Competition, and Tatsuya is selected to participate in a support role for his peers. Controversy strikes, because no one is happy with his selection due to his Weed status. There is a freak car accident (which is assumed to be a suicide attack on the school), but everyone is saved by magic and later go to some fancy ball. Oh, and on the side, Tatsuya uses his vast knowledge of the world’s magic and makes a magical tool that lets people fly, then shows it off to some friends at a tech company.

None of the above plot points have really stuck out to me or held my interest. It’s been a huge struggle to even pretend to care about this anime. The magical system still isn’t all that clear to me, and I have serious doubts that a rewatch will cure my lack of understanding. The pacing is entirely too slow, and the anime focuses on things for far too long. Overall, I’m just bored with this series. I understand there is a huge following of those who love it; my hat’s off to those folks, but this is just not my cup of tea.
