Kite is an interesting case. Most people I’ve spoken to have said that it manages to successfully merge hentai scenes together with a decent plot and deep characters. To me, it just manages to be an anime that tries to merge hentai components together with a good enough story and characters, ending up failing in both.
If there’s one real good thing this anime has, it’s style. The artwork and animation in Kite have a certain realism to it not seen in other action anime. As for the colors, they are bright and have plenty of life to them. The action scenes can be particularly easy to enjoy, though they are not really original or imaginative; nothing different from the other action anime out there.
The plot and characters, however, are a much different story. Sawa in particular is meant to be a tragic person with a very brutal and horrific past, and an equally bad present. However, even with the flashbacks and the certain events that take place, I failed to sympathize with her at all. You see, there is a problem with the characters of Kite: they are either emotionless or hollow; not one of them has their personalities fleshed out well enough that you can feel for them. As for the plot, it’s mediocre at best as it never managed to pull me in nor make me care what happened next. To make it worse, Kite also has a few scenes of needless sex placed throughout the two episodes. Though it is true that these scenes (except for one) show just what kind of life Sawa leads, none of them needed to be that explicit.
Kite is a hard anime to recommend to anyone. Those wanting porn will be disappointed by the low number of sex scenes, while those wanting characters and story will be left out in the cold; it’s going to leave a bad taste in your mouth either way. Just do yourself a favor and stay away from it.
