Majestic_prince_promoWell, the Spring 2013 Anime Season is upon us, and the first series to step up to bat for me was Majestic Prince. Initially this anime was nowhere even close to my radar, but then I stumbled across a trailer. It sparked my interest with promises of amazing mech battles, stunning animation, and an interesting story. Needless to say, I was pretty excited and quickly added it to my queue on Crunchyroll. I’m so glad I did.

First off, I was mostly correct – this anime quickly bombarded me with some gorgeously animated and exciting battle scenes, and there are quite a few of them! The story is pretty standard for the mech genre and reminds me of Candidate of Goddess. The basic premise is this: a group of five students are in training to be mech pilots and labeled as the lowest scoring and most pathetic team in the entire school, which is made up of those selected for a very critical mission in the current war. The characters each take a generic trope and stick to it pretty well, such as the love-struck girl, the dreamer, the nerd, the lancer, and the serious quiet type.  Beyond that, nothing else is really known about the war, the pilots, the enemy, or anything else… except apparently these guys are really good in actual battle, but just suck in training simulators. No idea why.

All that said, I am pretty interested to see how this goes, mostly to see how these characters go from being epic fails to heroes of the day in the face of amazing odds, and also to see what the backstory of the war is all about. I expect really good things out of this anime, and I really hope my instincts are correct about this…

My Score: 8/10
