Since the Saturday Incident invalidated the WTNV Q&A panel on Sunday, I found it difficult to wake up that morning. It had been a weekend of high emotion, and it was about all I could do to dress, pack up my things, and stagger down to the hotel lobby before noon checkout.

Sakura-Con 2014 by Caitlin Moore

I got there at around 10:45, just in time to wander around hopelessly lost in the labyrinthine convention center for a half an hour before finding my way to the “Crossdressing for Fun and Profit in Anime and Manga” panel. The title made me skeptical, but the description sounded good – there’s a lot of ignorance about gender-related issues in anime fandom as well as a good deal of ethnocentrism and things can get ugly pretty quickly.

Sakuracon has a lot going for it; it’s in the spring in Seattle, which even when it rains, as it did part of this year, is always nice and mild. It’s very suitable for any type of convention activity, whether it be lugging purchases around or costumes of any type. The neighborhood the convention center and surrounding hotels are in is a fantastic one – I’ve mentioned the Gameworks across the street before, and it remains a favorite after-con activity for many congoers, especially on Thursday night – and there’s no shortage of food or shopping or entertainment.
